wet dressings for eczema, wet wraps for eczema, wet wraps for dermatitis
As you know my little Mia, suffered from severe eczema. You can read more about our eczema recovery journey (by clicking this link).
We learnt this technique the first time Mia was admitted to hospital. And I must say, while this is slightly hard and uncomfortable to administer for young children, the results were amazing (for us)!
Here is what I noticed when we used them:
Wet dressings / Wet wraps are simply clean bandages, that are wet with cool water and applied to a wound / eczema to assist with calming skin.
The bandages could be:
I know having a child with eczema, or suffering from eczema yourself, can be very uncomfortable – so please don’t worry about trying to find the perfect bandage. A quick trip to your pharmacy will help you find the perfect bandages.
Step 1: Cleanse & Treat Skin
Make sure skin has been cleansed and treated.
For wet dressings to be effective, it is very important you you treat inflamed skin ready for dressings.
My Mia's Skin Relief Kit has been designed been designed as a natural, gentle and effective 3 step process to:
Step 1: Cleanse & Clear you skin
Step 2: Repair & Regenerate your skin
Step 3: Hydrate & Protect your skin
This system really is a very effective way to manage eczema flare ups, and is the perfect preparation before commencing wet wraps or wet dressings.
Step 2: Moisturise Your Skin
You want to wait a couple of minutes after you apply your skin relief treatment, and then, apply a thick layer of moisturiser all over the skin/ area you wish to apply the wet dressings on.
Step 3: Wet your dressings
Once your skin is treated and moisturised, it is time to bring out your bandages.
Bandages:
You can use tubular bandages or regular bandage wrap.
If using a tubular bandage, cut your bandage to size.
In the cooler months, I would cut 2 bandages (cut to size); one as a wet dressing + one as a dry dressing to put on on top of the wet dressing (to feel a little warmer).
However, in the hot summer months, the wet dressing alone worked well.
Bowl of water:
Once you bandage size are ready, you can pop your bandages into a bowl of warm water to ensure your bandages have been saturated with water.
Squeeze out excess water.
Step 4: Apply your wet dressings
Once your dressings have been squeezed for excess water, it is now time to apply your dressings over your inflamed skin.
It will feel wet and cool.
You can apply a dry dressing on the top of the wet dressings. (This is completely up to you).
Wait 15 minutes.
Or, you can keep the dressings on overnight.
Step 5: Remove wet dressings
Wait a minimum of 15minutes, or up to as long as you like. can tolerate, and then remove dressings.
After you have removed dressings, re-apply moisturiser over skin.
How often can I apply wet dressings?
You can apply your wet dressings 2-3 times a day,
When my daughter Mia was in hospital (with eczema) the nurses would apply wet dressings 3 times a day. We maintained this practice back at home.
Obviously, Mia was in a severe state, so you can adapt the wet dressings to suit you.
How do I clean my dressings?
A warm wash in your sensitive skin enzyme based washing detergent will work very well to cleanse the dressings.
What material should I use?
A natural fibre works best, such as cotton or bamboo. You want to avoid synthetic fibres to avoid any skin irritation from the fabric.
When will I start to see results?
Skin and our bodies, all react differently. So there is no guarantee how quickly you will start to see results.
However, for us, when my daughter Mia was young, we started to notice great results within a few days. This was because, she couldn't scratch her skin (whilst the dressings were on) and there was time for all of the skincare products to get absorbed.
We have created a free digital download guide for you with instructions for completing wet dressings for eczema, with a demonstration video.
